One of the most important components of the electric bike is the battery. The capacity of the battery determines the assistance range of the bike. The capacity depends on the electric voltage (volts) and the charge of the battery in Ampere-hours (Ah). The higher the voltage, the more power the battery supplies, and the higher the Ah, the longer the battery can deliver a certain power. Combined, these values represent the unit Watt-hours (Wh).

But a comparison based solely on power does not give a complete picture, since battery performance also depends on the voltage during discharge. The best way to compare battery packs with each other is by looking at the amount of energy supplied by the battery pack in Wh. The unit Wh takes into account both the capacity of the battery as well as the average battery voltage during discharge. The higher the Wh, the higher the range.

The Li-Ion batteries, with which Votani X1 and X2 are equipped, are becoming increasingly popular, because they have no memory effect and refreshing is no longer necessary. Li-Ion batteries are also widely used in MP3 players, mobile phones, et cetera. They are light weight, have a relatively large capacity and are less sensitive to temperature changes.

The actual range depends on many factors. The most influential factors are: pressure (hard tires have less resistance and offer a greater range), weight of the rider, wind, road surface condition, battery usage and speed (at 15 km/h the battery lasts longer than at 25 km/h), ride (bike as much as possible in a steady and solid speed, acceleration consumes more battery life).

When recharging, to ensure the maximum battery life does not decrease over time, recharge the battery when it is between 25% and 50%, preferably not below. In either case, it is important always to recharge the batteries after use. Storing uncharged batteries for a long time shortens the life and range. In the winter months, if the outside temperature approaches -10° C, it is recommended to take the battery inside and to charge it there, rather than in a cold barn or garage. This is better for the life cycle and the range when you want to go cycling in cold weather. The range can be reduced by 30-50% if the battery becomes too cold. Therefore keep batteries preferably at room temperature.

When batteries are not used in the fall or winter, recharge the batteries at least once per month.

    There are a few things to bear in mind when determining the appropriate range of  your battery. The higher-capacity the battery has the more expensive the battery (the longer the battery life) – this is why it’s important to determine the battery that best suits your journey.

    Your appropriate performance radius is dependent on several factors:

    • The higher the electric support level, the lower the range
    • Biking on poor road construction or hilly terrain will reduce the range
    • Low temperatures can reduce the radius by 20-30%
    • Using a high gear uses more energy and this will decrease the range
    • Your weight
    • Tire inflation. Ensure your tires are pumped up to ensure minimal influence of weight on range.
